The official end of Chattanooga's C.H. renovations are on May 19th. They're having a downtown-wide celebration and want people to come dressed up in period garb.

My mother and I will be at the Library, I think. Just look for me, with the gigantic-brimmed black hat.

I'll post details as they come in, but if anyone is interested in participating, here's the info:

The City of Chattanooga is looking for volunteers to assist with the Saturday, May 19, 2007 celebration of the grand re-opening of City Hall. The theme of the celebration is 1908 – the date of the original City Hall corner stone date.

Volunteers are needed in a variety of ways throughout the day. Some of the volunteer opportunities include:

Ø Parade Crew – our own News 12’s “Luther” is Grand Marshall;

Ø Crowd control;

Ø Actors/Volunteers in Period Dress (singles, couples & families) to interact with the crowd throughout the day. (aka – Williamsburg, VA style);

Ø Roving thespians;

Ø Volunteers to assist with event directions.

Ø Docents to tour citizens through City Hall (requires memorizing historical info and being on feet for 2 hour shifts)

There will be morning and afternoon shifts available; thereby, allowing volunteers to partake in the many activities scheduled throughout the day. All volunteers must be in 1908 attire. This may include:

Ø High Style; (big hats, long skirts, men’s hats, suit jacket)

Ø Agriculture (overalls, straw hats, work boots)

Ø Working Class (long skirts, small hats, simple clothes)

If you are interested in participating/volunteering in this once of a life time event, please email Laurie Shipley at Shipley_l@mail.chattanooga.gov. You must include your name, age, email address*, and telephone number no later than 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, 2007. You will be contacted shortly after regarding volunteer training. We look forward to hearing from you and thank you in advance for your willingness to volunteer.

Theoretically, we're past the deadline, but I doubt they'll care.

That sounds cool. Did they have pirates in 1908? Or maybe I could go with an Izod shirt with the collar popped and say that I'm dyslexic and thought they said 1980.

So if I did "crowd control," would I have to dress up like an old timey southern police officer from 1908 and harass anyone who looked ethnic, foreign, or like a yankee?

also, don't forget the handlebar moustache...

without the moustache, you're not allowed to pass off the slurs.
