anyone done it? what did they use? i was thinking about making a wire mesh base and then covering it with plaster of paris, but that seems like it'd be too heavy..would covering it in Model Magic or Hearty clay work?
or what about the fabric backed lightweight foam?

I've been wanted to do a mascot type costume, but have not ventured forth due to the fact I don't know where to begin in making the head

Yeah, if we could come up with a way to do this, I thikn it would really open a lot of opportunities to make some really unique stuff. I've been thinking about a Wampa costume lately....

i've done one mascot head for my true zodiac form kyo. i used the plastic mesh that you can find at walmart or any other craft store that is used in making those yarn needle point type things(not exactly sure what you call them). anyway you make a mask out of it by making sides, a piece that goes around your head and the you start adding on. my head had a movable jaw. this is easy to obtain once you get the jaw pieces made. all you have to do is make it where the bottom part of the jaw movies up and down when you open you mouth. this is done by putting a small light piece of wood right below your actually jaw and make sure it fits snuggly. you can add foam to it to make it more comfortable. to make the jaw snap back into place you use either strong elastic or rubber bands. i say go with the elastic as the rubber bands didn't work as well as i hoped. you attach them to the bottom jaw piece and then stretch them until it pulls the jaw up. that is where you want to attach it.

after that is all done with, try it on and make sure it works before covering it with fur or whatever you decide to use. i covered mine with felt first off so i could build onto it to give it the right affect, the i bought stretch suede and stretched that over it.

for the eyes if you go to michaels or walmart they have these christmas ornaments that are clear and come apart. depending on how big you want the eyes you can get different sizes. you only need to buy one seeing as it comes apart. you then make the pupil of the eye with poster board and creative painting. then you cut a slit or hole depending on what shape the iris is. you then bend this to make it fit right into the eye. after that is accomplished and the eye is glued together you need to get either plastic wrap or some type of clear plastic in order to seal the eye. this is done so that it doesn't fog up and you lose the little vision that you had. after that is done you will position the eye in the eye hole that you made on your head and hot glue it into place.

hopefully this helps, if not i can also direct you to someone else who does a different method but it works just as well.

you have no idea how much i appreciate your how to!!
using the plastic mesh is a good idea, and non toxic: far better than the stupid idea i was cooking up with wiremesh and paint on latex.

also, that head is amazing! a very, very awesome job..

Sadly - I have to buy my costumes... so I can't give much advice on building them - but I can show ya what I got!
